The 2023-24 NBA season is over for the Miami Heat and now the front office has to do a lot of deep thinking.
They have many big decisions to make, including one about lead star Jimmy Butler.
According to reporting from Anthony Chiang, Butler and his representatives will attempt to secure a $113 million contract extension this offseason.
Barry Jackson said that leaves the team in a tricky position.
They can either “say yes and pay Butler around $58 million in 3 years when he’s 37” or “say no and see if he asks for a trade or indicates if he would be a malcontent if Miami keeps him but refuses to extend him.”
Big news from Anthony here. Heat faces biggest decision of year — 1) Say yes and pay Butler around $58 million in 3 years when he’s 37 or B). Say no and see if he asks for a trade or indicates if he would be a malcontent if Miami keeps him but refuses to extend him. Seismic… https://t.co/dUmDplaW8j

The Heat have to be very careful with these negotiations because they want to keep Butler happy but also don’t want to spend too much, especially on a player who will be turning 35 in a few months.
They don’t want to agree to his terms and then regret it later when he is 37 years old and not playing at the same level he’s at now.
They also have to consider multiple other players on the roster, including Bam Adebayo, who is eligible for an extension this offseason.
Plus, the Heat need to consider a post-Butler era and have to lay the groundwork for that.
In other words, they need to have some spending cash to attract other talent from around the roster.
Butler has been very loyal to the Heat since coming to the team in 2019.
He has repeatedly said he would like to retire with the team and doesn’t want to head to another franchise.
But he also wants to be paid what he deserves after all he has done for the Heat.
Will he get his wish this summer?
