Being an NBA or NFL player comes with plenty of perks.

On top of endorsements and fame, those who make it are clearly wealthier than the average person.

Nonetheless, throughout the course of the years, we’ve seen countless stories of players who wound up going broke in the blink of an eye.

With that in mind, NBA legend Charles Barkley had some things to say during his latest appearance on Shannon Sharpe’s ClubShayShay.

“When you 55, how much money are you going to have left? That’s the key,” Barkley said.

He told a story about how Julius ‘Dr. J’ Erving called him out for having more cars than he could drive at the same time, and how he taught him to save money.

Barkley believes that athletes are too quick to buy flashy things to impress people, adding that they also have a tendency to hand out money left and right and take care of everybody.

The Phoenix Suns legend stated that young athletes don’t have to take care of their entire family and environment, adding that they could always do something nice for them, but that doesn’t mean having them on their payroll.

At the end of the day, everybody’s free to take care of their finances as they please, and it’s a fact that young athletes nowadays make ten times more than they did in Barkley’s time.

Even so, it’s key for them to be smart about their money, as it can all vanish right in front of them, way faster than it came in the first place.
