So far, the Memphis Grizzlies have only retired the jerseys of former players Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol.

That shows just how much they value the act of retiring jerseys and how seriously they take it.

But next season, they will add a third player to the rafters: Tony Allen.

According to NBACentral, the Grizzlies plan to retire his jersey during the 2024–25 season.

Allen played seven seasons with the Grizzlies and led the team to a playoff appearance every single time.

During Allen’s tenure with the Grizzlies, the team went all the way to the Western Conference Finals in 2013.

Allen was celebrated as one of the best defensive players in the NBA during his 14 years playing professional basketball.

He got his start with the Boston Celtics in 2004 and then moved to the Grizzlies in 2010.

He was a very important part of the team during a pivotal era of their history and was originally going to be celebrated a few years ago.

The Grizzlies planned to retire his jersey back in the 2021–22 season with Randolph but Allen asked that they postpone that because he was dealing with some legal issues.

Now that those are settled and several years have passed, Allen is ready to receive the honor.

During his seven seasons with the Grizzlies, Allen averaged 8.9 points and 4.3 rebounds and was repeatedly in the running for Defensive Player of the Year.

He also earned multiple spots on the NBA All-Defensive team.

The Grizzlies will be ready to commemorate Allen next season but they will hopefully have other reasons to celebrate too.

The team is hoping to be fully healthy and truly competitive again in the new season after a very dreadful 2023–24.
