The Chip Kelly era with the Philadelphia Eagles arrived with all the hype in the world and crashed and burned so spectacularly that some of his former players still can’t believe it.
He never got another shot in the NFL after leaving such a poor impression on his players, fans, and the organization as a whole, and former star running back LeSean McCoy has revealed another shocking and unnecessary aspect of the Kelly tenure that sheds even more light into why things went as poorly as they did.
McCoy spoke on the 25/10 show that he co-hosts with fellow former Eagle DeSean Jackson and brought up how Kelly didn’t let Eagles players wear black socks, which Jackson confirmed.

McCoy initially thought it was a joke after Kelly brought this up at one of the team’s first practices and they laughed about it, but then Kelly called him out when they got to the film room one day and McCoy was wearing black socks because he didn’t know Kelly was serious.
Over the years, former players have shared numerous anecdotes like this about Kelly’s tenure in Philly, and it makes a lot of sense why he was unable to connect with his players and deliver consistent success on the field.
He was focused on all the wrong things and did a poor job bonding and building trust with the people in his locker room.
It’s not often you hear about anybody having an agenda against black socks, but Kelly is quite the character.
