Everyone’s Saying The Same Thing About The Pistons After Draft Lottery

The Detroit Pistons were the worst team during the 2023-24 NBA season as they finished with a dismal 14-68 record.

Despite hiring head coach Monty Williams and having several tantalizing prospects on the roster, the Pistons were a mess on both ends of the floor.

Players like Cade Cunningham, Jalen Duran, and Ausar Thompson got valuable reps, but that’s about where the optimism ends for the franchise.

With the worst record in the NBA, Detroit had the best odds to win the annual Draft Lottery.

Even after the league changed how the odds would be assigned to teams, Pistons fans were expected to walk away with at least a top-four pick.

However, Detroit wound up with the fifth overall pick which had people saying the same thing via Mike Curtis of The Dallas Morning News and Field Yates of ESPN.

“The Pistons had the worst record in the NBA in back to back years and it resulted in two consecutive No. 5 picks. Brutal,” Curtis tweeted.

“The Pistons have now had the NBA’s worst record in back-to-back years and landed the 5th pick in the lottery on both occasions. Brutal luck,” Yates tweeted.

It’s extremely bad luck for Detroit to have to land the fifth pick twice in a row despite owning the worst record, though that’s just how the ping pong balls bounce sometimes.

The Pistons should still be able to grab a starting-caliber player in the draft, though it has to sting for everyone involved that they slipped that low on the board.
