Every few years or so, some question the way the NBA Draft Lottery works, as sometimes things don’t work out in the favor of the team in the league that had the worst record.
This year, the Detroit Pistons were the favorite to land the top pick in the 2024 NBA Draft after another disastrous season, resulting in a league-worst record of 14-68.
The Washington Wizards, who finished only one win better than the Pistons with 15, were able to secure the No. 2 overall pick in the draft behind the Atlanta Hawks.
The Hawks only had a 3% chance of winning the draft lottery on Sunday, but it didn’t matter as they were able to get the top draft choice, defying the odds and making things rough for the Pistons.
According to Legion Hoops, this is the sixth straight year that the team with the worst record was unable to land the top pick, which obviously isn’t great news for a struggling franchise like Detroit.

The Houston Rockets were also big winners in Sunday’s draft lottery, with the team finishing with a .500 record (41-41) and coming just short of the NBA playoffs, but now own the No. 3 overall pick in the upcoming NBA Draft.
The San Antonio Spurs will also have a high pick once again in the draft, with the team securing the No. 4 overall pick after landing the top pick in last year’s draft and bringing in a generational talent in Victor Wembanyama, who has quickly become the face of the franchise following in the footsteps of David Robinson and Tim Duncan.
