The NBA just had it’s draft lottery, an event that is highly anticipated every year.
Last season, the San Antonio Spurs were shocked and elated to receive the No. 1 overall pick, giving them the opportunity to draft Victor Wembanyama.
Wembanyama is coming off his Rookie of the Year campaign, an indication that the Spurs made the right call in drafting him.
The 2024 NBA Draft doesn’t have a player like Wembanyama, and as a result, there isn’t as massive of a push to have the No. 1 overall pick.
However, the Atlanta Hawks did luck their way into the No. 1 pick via the lottery, which puts them in a powerful position.
Many fans and analysts have indicated that the Hawks should trade this pick away and secure other pieces to build around Trae Young, but it remains to be seen what the team will do.
GM Landry Fields recently talked about this in a segment of Bally Sports South, saying that it is “Not even our focus right now.”

Fields is seemingly more focused on how to make the team better in the 2024-2025 season rather than worried about the status of the No. 1 overall pick.
If they do keep it, their options likely don’t have a player with a Wembanyama-like upside, but they could still get a talented youngster to help grow and develop moving forward.
It will be interesting to see how teams value the No. 1 pick in the upcoming draft, and if anyone will make a big move to trade up into this position.
