After an incredibly disappointing and forgettable 2023-24 NBA season, where the Detroit Pistons won a league-worst 14 games, the struggling franchise came into Sunday’s NBA Draft Lottery with the best chance to land the top pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.

Following such an awful finish to the season, the best news the Pistons could get before heading into what will likely be a busy summer is winning the draft lottery and owning the No. 1 overall pick.

Unfortunately for Detroit, the Pistons ended up with the No. 5 overall pick in the NBA Draft, which is obviously not a great result for a team that desperately needs an influx of young talent.

During the NBA Draft Lottery on Sunday, Ausar Thompson, who the team brought in through the draft last season, was in attendance to represent the Pistons, and he couldn’t help but show his disappointment when the results were announced via NBA on ESPN.

Ultimately, the Atlanta Hawks, of all teams, were able to secure the top pick in the 2024 NBA Draft with only 3% odds of landing that pick, which is obviously a gut punch for the Pistons.

Fortunately, the Pistons can still bring in a talented young player at No. 5, so all is not lost for the struggling franchise, but this draft class isn’t nearly as talented as it was last year.

It’ll be interesting to see what the Pistons do during this NBA offseason in order to right the ship in Detroit, as this team could be very active in NBA free agency and potentially on the trade market.
