Victor Wembanyama’s financial impact on the San Antonio Spurs was long talked about before the 2023 NBA Draft.

Some experts even claimed that team revenues could go up from $25 million to $50 million this season in terms of merchandising, endorsement deals, ticket sales, and whatnot.

However, what helps one team hurts another.

According to a report by French outlet Le Parisien (via NBACentral), Wembanyama’s former team, Metropolitans 92, has officially gone bankrupt.

Apparently, the team has informed the French basketball authorities that it can no longer compete at any level.

This is kind of surprising, considering the fact that they had Wembanyama and were in the French league finals just a year ago.

They also had Washington Wizards rookie Bilal Coulibaly, and looked like a competitive side with a steady project.

Of course, this is a complicated scenario, and it’ll be interesting to see how they’ll be able to overcome this, if at all.

Wembanyama, on the other hand, is looking at mountains of cash going his way, signing a deal with Nike and multiple sponsors and looking like one of the faces of the league.

He had one of the most impressive rookie seasons this game has ever seen, and his one-of-a-kind skill set and body will grant him plenty of cash during his playing days for as long as he stays healthy.

As for the Spurs, they’ll most likely exhaust all avenues to make sure to keep the most promising player in the league around for years to come, not only for the basketball success but also because of the huge financial impact he could have on the team and the community.
