It has been a few weeks since the NFL Draft, and everyone is still recovering from the shock of the Atlanta Falcons drafting Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with the No. 8 overall pick even after giving Kirk Cousins a 4-year, $180 million deal this offseason.
Many thought the Falcons were simply a quarterback away from competing over the past few years, and now they have two QBs, but fans are waiting for answers on how this situation is going to shake out.
Former NFL GM Michael Lombardi appeared on “The Pat McAfee Show” today and lambasted the team for the selection, saying, “The Falcons couldn’t stop anybody in the run game and to win you’re gonna have to make plays defensively,” while adding, “You can spin it any way you want but the Falcons had other issues that they needed to solve.”

Lombardi made an undeniable point that is shared by many football fans.
It’s hard to grasp taking a QB at No. 8 after signing that Cousins deal, and it has nothing to do with Penix in general.
The team defended it by saying they wanted to ensure they had a QB of the future and that they loved Penix that much, but the team’s defensive issues have been undeniable.
Cousins immediately makes the Falcons a contender, but undercutting him by taking a rookie that high could throw off the locker room.
This defense has to be better to justify this pick, and if it isn’t, that’s usually when people start getting fired.
