The San Antonio Spurs have their next franchise big man after they took Victor Wembanyama No. 1 overall in the 2023 NBA Draft.
Wembanyama had meteoric expectations after being pegged the best prospect in the class despite the strength of the rest of the draft.
The French native had a tough start to his NBA career after a disappointing first game at the annual Las Vegas NBA Summer League, leading some to believe the hype was overblown and that the center would struggle with the physicality in the league.
However, Wembanyama proved any sort of doubters wrong once the 2023-24 NBA season started as he showed tangible improvement month after month.
Wembanyama really hit his stride midway through the season as he looked more comfortable on both ends of the floor and produced highlights on a nightly basis.
After his rookie season concluded, fans pointed out how Wembanyama was able to prove any sort of negative narrative wrong, via Spurs Culture.
Before the season: After the season:
“He’s too skinny.” Unanimous ROTY
“He’ll get bullied.” Led NBA in blocks
“Chet will win ROTY.” 40-20 game
“Overrated!” 20-20 game
“He’s just hype.” 2… pic.twitter.com/6YEUdwmhm6

There were legitimate concerns about Wembanyama’s wiry frame, but he was able to overcome any sort of physical limitations with his length and size on the floor.
Production-wise, Wembanyama showed he’ll be a perennial Defensive Player of the Year candidate after finishing second in voting this past season.
With how quickly he improved, he is projected to have another strong season once the 2024-25 NBA season begins.
