The Los Angeles Lakers are going through a crucial decision-making process right now.

They’re about to hire their fourth head coach of the LeBron James era, and there aren’t that many feasible candidates available.

Also, with LeBron James having a player option for next season, they know they must act promptly and choose a guy that appeases their best player.

Otherwise, they just risk him leaving.

James is still a Laker until he says otherwise, and it seems like his lifelong friend and agent, Rich Paul, may have revealed his plans to decline his player option.

Talking on TNT during the Western Conference Finals, Paul talked as if James was already a free agent, even though he hasn’t actually turned down his player option yet (Via Chris Haynes & Legion Hoops).

Rich Paul: “LeBron is a free agent.”

… but LeBron currently has a pending player option. Interesting slip up from his agent.

Of course, this isn’t particularly a surprise, and it doesn’t necessarily mean he’s going to leave the Lakers.

Declining his player option makes more sense for him from a financial standpoint, as he can get more money on a two-year deal as a free agent.

Most reports stated that it was the plan all along, even if he decided to stay in Los Angeles.

There were some rumblings about LeBron looking to join his son Bronny James somewhere else if he was drafted by another team, but that doesn’t seem to be the case right now.

His entire business operation and family are in Los Angeles, so it’s hard to envision him walking away at this point in his career.
