Franchise left tackles don’t come along too often, and when they do, it’s exceedingly rare that teams let them leave town via free agency or trade, which gives the player plenty of leverage when it’s time for that big contract extension.
That’s exactly the situation the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have found themselves in with Tristan Wirfs, and we have finally learned. a bit more about what he is looking for with his new deal.
Rick Stroud of The Tampa Bay Times wrote an article about Wirfs’ holdout and said, “How much will Wirfs ultimately sign for? Probably a million or more north of the four-year, $112 million the Lions gave tackle Penei Sewell.”

That’s the way it works with the big positions in the sense that every big potential contract will use the previous big contract as a measuring stick, and in this case, Wirfs reportedly wants to beat Sewell by just a million.
Wirfs has been the quiet anchor of this offense for years and was a big reason why the team was able to make a surprising run to the Divisional Round of the playoffs last season behind first-year quarterback Baker Mayfield.
Tampa took care of Mayfield and Mike Evans this offseason with new extensions, and it only seems like a matter of time before they take care of Wirfs too.
This isn’t the kind of player you mess around with, and no Bucs fan wants to see this man putting on a new uniform anytime soon.
Keep an eye out for this deal getting done sooner rather than later.
