After getting embarrassed in last year’s Eastern Conference Finals by the Miami Heat, the Boston Celtics have stormed back with a vengeance and are just one win away from making the 2024 NBA Finals.
Boston has gotten an easy draw throughout the 2024 NBA Playoffs, playing shorthanded teams like the Miami Heat and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first two rounds.
The Celtics got even more health luck as they saw Tyrese Haliburton miss Game 3 with a hamstring injury which they took advantage of to beat the Indiana Pacers to take a 3-0 series lead.
Head coach Joe Mazzulla deserves a lot of credit for being able to remake the Boston roster in his image as they play a more modern style of offense coupled with their usual stifling defense.
Although Mazzulla’s earned a reputation for being a sort of oddball as an individual, his basketball knowledge and feel is superb and is a large reason why the Celtics are in the position they’re in now.
When asked why he decided to become a head coach, Mazzulla gave about as honest as an answer as he could via Jay King of The Athletic.
“I coach because I’m not really good at anything else,” Mazzulla said.

It sounds like Mazzulla’s also got a sense of humor, though he likely wasn’t kidding given that most NBA head coaches eat, sleep, and breathe basketball nonstop.
While Mazzulla surely has other hobbies he is good at, there’s no denying his basketball acumen as it’s served him and the Celtics well up to this point.
