Being one of the best players in the NBA comes with some perks, but it also comes with some big burdens.

That’s particularly true when you start making a lot of money, as the fans and pundits start judging you differently because of certain standards you should meet.

That was the case with Jaylen Brown.

He was often deemed an underrated player, and some even argued that he was better than Jayson Tatum in big moments.

Then, as soon as he became the highest-paid player in the league, the narrative around him changed drastically.

People started pointing out his inconsistent free-throw shooting and glaring struggles with his left hand.

Nonetheless, the former lottery pick couldn’t care less.

When asked about how he deals with his countless critics, he stated that he still thinks he’s one of the best two-way guards/wings in the Association, adding that he doesn’t care about what people have to say (via NBA TV).

“I think I’m one of the best two-way wings; guards in this game… As time has gone by and I got to this point, I stopped caring and I just embrace.”

Notably, that’s the only way to deal with this kind of profession.

An athlete must be self-motivated to keep getting better.

It’s impossible to please everybody, and the fans will always talk about what a player is not and rarely about what a player is.

Brown isn’t the most outspoken guy either, so it’s not like he’s done much PR to try and get on the fans’ good side, and neither should he.

At the end of the day, he’s not to blame for the league’s ever-growing payroll and salary structure, and while he’s not the best player in the league by any means, he’s still close to the top, and his salary will make much more sense three years from now.
