Being the best defensive player in the NBA is an honor that should be reserved for the elite only, especially in today’s offensive-driven era.

That’s why some fans and even players have often taken offense at the fact that Rudy Gobert has won a league-high four Defensive Player of the Year awards.

Granted, Gobert has made a big impact as a rim protector during the regular season.

However, he’s often become a liability — or at least not as good as he usually is — come playoff time, and this has been the case again this season.

That’s why, in the latest edition of ESPN’s “First Take,” former NBA player Kendrick Perkins unloaded on him.

He claimed that voting for him for Defensive Player of the Year was the biggest regret of his media career, stating that he would resign from his voting privileges because he had failed the profession and the voting process by choosing Gobert, via Awful Announcing.

Kendrick Perkins says that he’s embarrassed he used his Defensive Player of the Year vote on Rudy Gobert and calls it the biggest regret of his media career.

“He has tarnished the Defensive Player of the Year award. He has. He’s not respected by his peers. We saw what happened… pic.twitter.com/P4ykITaNZu

He continued his rant by stating that no one seemed to fear or even respect Gobert, as all guys go at him in the playoffs, and he continues to be a defensive liability.

Notably, his on-off numbers actually state otherwise, but Perkins stated that he didn’t want to hear about any analytics or whatnot, as Gobert was clearly getting dominated night in and night out.

He also called him out for having just three blocks in three Western Conference Finals games despite being the supposed defensive anchor in the paint.

Gobert is the most criticized player in the NBA, and barring a miracle, it doesn’t seem like that’s going to change any time soon.
