The Indiana Pacers may have overachieved this season, but that doesn’t mean they’re that far off from what they accomplished.
They were one of the deepest teams in the league, and while they didn’t have that many big-name players, several of their guys were major contributors to their success, and they’re mostly young players.
That’s why the Pacers will most likely focus on player development and internal improvement in the offseason, as opposed to just trying to make some big moves in free agency.
According to NBA insider Shams Charania, the team feels like they’ve already made their big move by trading for Pascal Siakam, which is why their main priority for the offseason will be to get him to sign a contract extension.
Talking on FanDuel TV’s “Run It Back,” Charania claimed that he didn’t expect this to be a busy offseason for the Pacers.

He talked about how they gave up three first-round picks to get Siakam and how he led the team in points and rebounds per game since he arrived.
There’s reportedly optimism in getting a deal done, and Siakam recently raved about the team and the city as well.
The Pacers have another potential building block in Bennedict Mathurin, who’s going to be back to full strength for the start of the upcoming season.
And with them being in a smaller market and usually struggling to lure top-notch free agents, chances are they’re just going to keep building around the guys they currently have, Siakam included.
