The Los Angeles Lakers didn’t have a championship-caliber roster, and Darvin Ham wasn’t a championship-caliber coach.
Both things are true and can coexist.
However, regardless of the roster, some franchises are always expected to compete for a championship.
That’s the case with the Lakers.
They’ve endured some dark times — much darker than this — and still, every time they can’t compete, it’s a major disappointment.
With that in mind, sports analyst Chris Broussard claimed that whoever took the job right now — and especially JJ Redick — would be set up for failure.
Talking on First Things First, Broussard stated that the Lakers always have a championship-or-bust mindset, and whoever takes the reins of the team is going to get the blame when they don’t get the job done.
“The Lakers are championship or bust team. You’re expected to win a title — and if you don’t, which you won’t, then you’re going to get blamed.” — @Chris_Broussard pic.twitter.com/1hi1cMeu28

That’s fair.
Some might criticize the Lakers for hiring another rookie coach, especially considering Redick, unlike Ham, hasn’t even climbed the ladder as an assistant coach.
However, it wouldn’t be the first time that a former player gets a head coaching job without any previous experience, and while that hasn’t worked out well more often than not, there’s no reason to believe Redick cannot be a great coach.
Still, he’s not doing himself any favors right now.
Not only will his relationship with LeBron James be a perennial talking point even inside of his own locker room but he will also be joining a team that’s always expected to win even when they don’t have the pieces to do so.
