After flaming out early in the NBA playoffs, losing to the New York Knicks in the first round in six games, the Philadelphia 76ers are heading into an uncertain future, with most of the team set to enter NBA free agency at the end of next month.

With the 76ers believing they are currently in the midst of a championship window with superstar center Joel Embiid and up-and-coming guard Tyrese Maxey leading the way, Philadelphia and well-known general manager Daryl Morey are expected to be aggressive this summer in their attempt to bring in another star player.

Although most of the talk over the last few months has been about the team potentially targeting Paul George in free agency or possibly taking a run at LeBron James, the 76ers would like to fix a mistake they made a few years ago by not paying Jimmy Butler, who ended up getting traded to the Miami Heat.

According to Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer, the 76ers brass regret not retaining Butler and could try to bring him back this summer, via NBACentral.

“Talking to my sources, the 76ers’ ownership group — they kinda regret what they did five years ago [in trading Jimmy Butler] and they see the success that he’s had. And they realize … he could be in their eyes, the missing piece, and they’re willing to give him the money he wants,” Pompey said.

Although the Heat have said they have no intention of trading Butler this summer, that stance could change if the 76ers come calling with an intriguing offer, especially if the veteran star indicates a desire to head back to Philadelphia.

Only time will tell what the future holds for Butler and the 76ers and whether a reunion can come to fruition or if Philadelphia must head in another direction.
