Before the start of the season, no one saw New York Yankees starter Luis Gil dominate to this extent.
Yes, he always had promise because he has a huge fastball, but his serious control issues and the fact he is coming off the dreaded Tommy John surgery made him something of a question mark.
He wasn’t even expected to be part of the rotation initially, but Gerrit Cole got hurt and that was his golden opportunity.
It’s safe to say Gil is making the most of his chance.
After another incredible start on Wednesday night (eight innings of just one run against the Los Angeles Angels) his ERA went down to 1.99 in 63.1 innings of work.
What he has done in May, however, is nothing short of amazing.
“Luis Gil in six May starts: 6-0, 0.70 ERA, 44 K, 0.67 WHIP,” Talkin’ Yanks tweeted.

No, that ERA is not a mistake: it’s the real thing.
Gil just toyed with hitters all month long.
He made six starts in May, and won them all.
He struck out more than seven hitters per outing on average during those six games, and conceded just three earned runs… in 38.2 innings.
We don’t really know what the Yankees will do when Cole is ready to return from his elbow injury (should be around late-June), but we would like to think Gil earned a spot.
The only scenario in which he could be removed from the rotation would have to be explained by workload management.
He is a true stud and has been a top-ten starter in the American League this year.
