The Dallas Cowboys made a rather surprising move last season.
Jerry Jones traded for Trey Lance from the San Francisco 49ers.
It was a low-risk/high-reward pickup, as they wouldn’t have to give up much for a young player who was a former first-round pick and seemed to have some upside.
Some thought he was putting pressure on Dak Prescott and sending him a passive-aggressive message, while others thought he had a legitimate chance to be his successor.
Lance entered the offseason trying to earn the backup spot, and judging by Coach McCarthy’s words, it seems like he might be on the right track to do so.
According to Cowboys insider Michael Gehlken, McCarthy praised Lance for the way he’s getting a hold of the offense, stating that he’s close to becoming a ‘master of the system’ and that he only needs as many reps as he could get.
Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy reiterated he’s “definitely” seen significant progress from QB Trey Lance. “Now starting to get the timing with the routes. …He’s close to being a master of the system. He has a really high understanding. …He just needs as many reps as he can.” pic.twitter.com/knDt3m8TbR

That has always been the case with Lance.
He hasn’t been able to stay healthy, and he has barely played, dating back to his days in college.
While he hasn’t been very impressive in limited action, it’s not like he’s had that many reps to develop his game.
Even so, he’s just 24 years old, so there’s still a chance he finds his stride in this league.
There’s still uncertainty about Dak Prescott’s future with the team, so even though the chances of Lance getting the nod in Dallas are slim, they’re not zero.
