The Minnesota Vikings knew they had to find a suitable replacement for Kirk Cousins.
There weren’t going to be that many options in the market, and with the NFL Draft always being uncertain, they did what they could by going after Sam Darnold.
Darnold looked like a potential stopgap in the position while they found a long-term solution.
However, the more they see him, the more they seem to like him.
According to a report by Kevin Seifert of ESPN, the Vikings have been quite impressed with Darnold’s growth (Via The Purple Persuasion).
Apparently, Vikings QB Coach Josh McCown has been in awe of how much he’s matured and improved from the time they were together with the New York Jets.
According to #Vikings QB Coach Josh McCown via @SeifertESPN, QB Sam Darnold is “much more mature” and has “learned” a lot more about football since his days with the #Jets

Some thought Darnold was bound to take Brock Purdy’s job at some point with the San Francisco 49ers last season, but HC Kyle Shanahan stood by his quarterback even during a tough stretch midway through the campaign.
As of now, it seems like Darnold is going to be QB1 by the start of the season, with J.J. McCarthy potentially getting the nod at some point.
The Vikings gave him a $10 million deal not only because that was the way to secure he’d be there but also because they clearly thought he could hold down the fort at least for half a season.
Whether he’s going to be able to convince them to give him a longer leash and more chances to start until the end of the year remains to be seen.
