The Seattle Seahawks have a new head coach and a new backup quarterback.

Pete Carroll walked away and Drew Lock signed with the New York Giants, leading them to trade for Sam Howell.

Nonetheless, that doesn’t mean Geno Smith’s job is in jeopardy, or at least it shouldn’t be.

Even so, the UNC product will compete as hard as ever.

Recently, Howell shared his mindset and approach to being Smith’s backup, and while he acknowledged that the veteran quarterback has been great to him, he claimed to be a competitor first and foremost, so that’s not going to change any time soon:

“In this league, to be able to play, you’ve gotta compete,” Howell said. “And that’s what I’m willing to do. No matter what the situation is, no matter who the starter is, I’m coming to compete every single day. And Geno has been great,” Howell said.

Howell also knows what it’s like to be a starter in this league, and losing that spot so early and quickly must sting a lot.

There were some positives with him and he did put up some interesting numbers, but his decision-making left plenty to be desired at times.

Smith revived his career in Seattle and got a huge deal, so it’s hard to envision them benching him any time soon, barring a disaster.

Then again, anything can happen when there’s a coaching change, and Howell is younger, so he could still have some upside for the organization.

Whatever the case, it seems like it won’t be long before the Seahawks are back in the hunt for a starting quarterback.

Whether it’ll be Howell or someone else that leads the post-Geno Smith era remains to be seen, but they might not be in a position to compete at the highest level with either of them.
