Colin Cowherd Believes NBA Teams Have Shifted Their Strategy

It seems like the NBA might be drifting away from the Big 3 era.

It may have something to do with the best players being up in age, or perhaps the new CBA was able to level the field a little.

Whatever the case, the teams that have found the most success over the past couple of years have been built, not bought.

Even the Boston Celtics, who traded for Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, had built and developed their roster via the NBA Draft for the most part before this season.

And with the Los Angeles Lakers reportedly set to hire UConn’s Dan Hurley, Colin Cowherd believes we’re witnessing a shift in strategy (via The Volume).

“The league now is a draft and develop league”

Cowherd argued that the Lakers aren’t doing this for LeBron but for the future of the organization, stating that this is now a ‘draft and develop’ league.

He also claimed that the teams that have been good lately are tough teams built from scratch, and he might have a valid point there.

The Denver Nuggets built 90% of their roster via the draft and development, and so did the Minnesota Timberwolves, Indiana Pacers, and Oklahoma City Thunder.

Teams like the Phoenix Suns or even the Lakers have failed to keep up with the rest of the league.

The Orlando Magic and Houston Rockets are also using the same strategy, and they seem to have bright futures.

It’s nice to see teams going back to developing players and being patient.

Superteams will always be nice in video games, but they might not be sustainable in real life.
