Reports from inside the Los Angeles Lakers say the team’s front office is meeting with UConn’s Dan Hurley this weekend to discuss hiring him as head coach.

That means negotiations between the two sides are beginning and they could be quite intense.

On “First Things First,” Chris Broussard said that Hurley should demand a lot from the team.

“Dan Hurley should ask for $14 to $15 million a year from the Lakers,” Broussard said, adding that he should also require a multi-year deal that gives him some serious job security.

Hurley would be smart to ask for a lot from the Lakers, for a number of reasons.

Firstly, he knows they have the money.

The Lakers have been notoriously stingy when it comes to signing contracts with players, but that’s because their finances have been limited by luxury taxes, big contracts, and more.

None of that applies to hiring a new head coach so the Lakers can spend whatever they want to get Hurley.

The idea of him earning $90 million over six years isn’t far-fetched at all and Hurley knows that.

He also needs to be sure that he has a contract that ensures he will be around for a few years.

Signing up to lead the Lakers isn’t an easy job and the pressure and expectations will weigh heavily on him right away.

He needs to know that he isn’t going to be fired after one season.

The good news for Hurley is that the Lakers have plenty to spend and they want a long-term relationship with their next coach.

This means he will get paid well and will have a contract that keeps him in Los Angeles for a very long time.
