When he first made it to the NBA, not many people thought Dirk Nowitzki was cut out to thrive in the league.
Despite his size, he wasn’t particularly fast or athletic, which is why he had to add something unique to his game.
He ended up becoming the greatest shooting big man this game had ever seen, working on his signature one-legged turnaround, expanding his range to the three-point line, and becoming an efficient scorer.
Dirk’s demeanor also helped him become a fan favorite and earn the respect of his peers.
But just like everybody else, he also grew up idolizing other NBA players.
That’s why he recently admitted that he was a diehard Orlando Magic fan when they had Shaquille O’Neal and Anferenee ‘Penny’ Hardaway.
As a matter of fact, he was such a big fan that he actually learned the lyrics to one of Shaq’s rap songs.
Talking on The Big Podcast, Dirk actually rapped one of those lyrics, jokingly stating that he was perhaps the only person on Earth who followed Shaq’s career in hip-hop.

Shaq has worn many hats throughout the course of his career, and while he’s found plenty of success in most of his endeavors, it’s safe to say that he didn’t make a lot of money as a hip-hop artist.
Whatever the case, that’s yet another example of why Dirk wasn’t the prototypical player coming from overseas.
He deserves a lot of credit for breaking barriers and paving the way for so many talented players that entered the league after him, and that’s perhaps the most important part of his legacy.
