After getting eliminated by the Boston Celtics in the second round of the NBA playoffs, the Cleveland Cavaliers headed into the offseason with a lot of work to do, with some substantial changes expected to be made to the roster and potentially the coaching staff as well.
It was rumored that head coach J.B. Bickerstaff was on the hot seat in Cleveland after the season was over for the Cavaliers and even though he expressed a desire to keep coaching the team, longtime team owner Dan Gilbert and company chose to part ways with him.
With Bickerstaff now unemployed and a big void left at head coach, the Cavaliers have been doing their due diligence early in the offseason to find a replacement and may have narrowed the field to one candidate in particular.
According to Brian Windhorst of ESPN, James Borrego appears to be “gaining momentum” toward getting the job in Cleveland and becoming Bickerstaff’s successor, via NBACentral.
“Other candidates that they’re interested in, are moving on elsewhere,” Windhorst said.

Although Borrego has been connected to the Los Angeles Lakers recently, and Dan Hurley recently took himself out of the running for the position, the 46-year-old might have a better opportunity in Cleveland without the added pressure of coaching superstar LeBron James while in Los Angeles.
It’ll be interesting to see if the Cavaliers try to ramp up the process of hiring Borrego with fear of the Lakers trying to lure him to Los Angeles, as they’ll want to avoid a potential bidding war.
