With Dan Hurley staying at UConn to try and win three consecutive NCAA titles, the Los Angeles Lakers are now officially in scramble mode.
The Lakers no longer have their top candidate on the table, and it was fairly shocking to see Hurley turning them down.
Not only had he been vocal about his desire to coach in the pros, but also, the fact that he turned down more than twice the money he was going to make in Connecticut was a bit of a surprise.
However, Mike Golic was fairly disappointed with the offer.
Talking on his “GoJo and Golic” show, he claimed that, being a professional sports team, he thought the Lakers’ offer was a little underwhelming, and he was expecting them to be more aggressive to try and pry him away from his program.

“Making $11.6M a year would have been a massive deal, but we’re talking about pro sports. We’re talking about trying to pry someone away. I was expecting more.” pic.twitter.com/Fy8roLNYv5

The Lakers reportedly made him an offer for a six-year contract worth a whopping $70 million.
He would’ve made north of $11 million per year and become one of the six-highest-paid coaches in the league, with Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr leading the way with $17.5 million a season.
Clearly, it wasn’t about money.
Then again, the Lakers could’ve one-upped their offer if they thought it was about finances.
They reportedly wanted Hurley to build his program within the organization and lead them through the post-LeBron James era as well, and they thought he was the right guy to develop their young players.
Now, they must hit the drawing board again, with whoever they choose knowing that he wasn’t even their first option.
