The search for a new head coach for the Los Angeles Lakers was thrown into chaos on Monday when Dan Hurley revealed that he was sticking with UConn and rejecting LA’s offer of six years and $70 million.

That was quite a blow to the Lakers but they are still working hard to find someone to replace Darvin Ham.

However, the position isn’t one that people are eager to take.

According to NBA insider Briant Windhorst, via NBACentral, “coaching candidates around the league believe the [Cleveland Cavaliers’] coaching job is more attractive than the Lakers’ coaching job.”

So, which team will get a new coach first?

There are many reasons why the Cavaliers’ job is more attractive to potential coaches.

Firstly, the team is in a much better position right now.

They finished 2023–24 as the fourth-best team in the East, and they have a number of talented stars on their roster, including Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland, Jarrett Allen, Evan Mobley, and others.

Plus, the team has an easier conference and the job doesn’t come with the added scrutiny that will weigh down anyone who takes on the Lakers’ position.

Additionally, LA’s next head coach will have to juggle multiple major tasks.

Not only will they need to win as much as they can as soon as they can, but they will also be required to lay the groundwork for the future of the franchise.

LA will be losing LeBron James over the next few years and the next coach has to both use him smartly now and also envision what comes after him.

The Lakers aren’t used to not being a coveted destination for NBA coaches but they are currently dealing with a lack of interest.
