The NBA’s awards are typically met with scrutiny from fans and players across the league.
Whether it is awards like Rookie of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, or an All-NBA selection, there always seems to be debate over the people who are chosen.
Lonzo Ball’s recent comments are a prime indication of this.
Ball recently talked about this on his podcast, The WAE Show, outlining his picks for the best defensive players in the league.
The NBA’s All-NBA defensive first-team from this year consisted of Bam Adebayo, Anthony Davis, Rudy Gobert, Herb Jones, and Victor Wembanyama.
Wembanyama and Adebayo were the only two common players on Ball’s list.
He named Jaden McDaniels, Alex Caruso, and Jrue Holiday as the three players to round out his top five.

Ball’s comments are a sign that players’ defensive skills are evaluated differently by various individuals around the league.
Some admire statistics more than others, while some are more focused on what a player can do as a whole during their time on defense.
Players like Adebayo and Wembanyama can certainly rack up steals and blocks, while players like Holiday and Caruso are more known for their all-around defensive performances.
Ball is convinced that he has the correct top-five players in the league on his list, but like other awards, it isn’t easy to name a definitive list.
It will be interesting to see how players react to hearing Ball’s comments on the matter, and if there will be any heated disagreements over who he picked.
