Looking back, it’s almost impossible to think that two NBA teams would even consider passing on Luka Doncic in the draft.
Doncic took the league by storm right out of the gate, and he’s one of the most special offensive talents this game has ever seen.
That wasn’t particularly obvious at first glance, not even to his coach.
Recently, former Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle opened up on getting to coach Doncic and his honest thoughts on him.
Talking to Chris Long for his “Green Light” podcast, he credited former GM Donnie Nelson for knowing just how good Doncic was.
He claimed that even though he doesn’t move particularly fast, he’s actually an elite athlete who could even play above the rim if need be, adding that he could “turn the burners” and that he’s way bigger, stronger, and quicker than people realize.
The Indiana Pacers coach also claimed that Doncic should be considered the best player in the world right now.

Doncic took his game to a whole new level in the playoffs, finally playing some strong defense for the first time in his career.
Even so, he also left some to be desired in the NBA Finals, and he’s got to be way more mature and control his temper if he wants to become the legend we all know he can be.
The Mavericks are down 3-1 in the Finals, and their chances of reverting that situation are quite slim.
Still, anything can happen when you have such a unique and dominant offensive talent leading the way for your team.
