It took them a while, but the Toronto Raptors eventually realized that it was better for them to just rebuild and hit the drawing board again.

They have a special young player in Scottie Barnes, but most of their veterans were already on their way out.

Notably, they were able to pick up a very valuable role player in the Pascal Siakam trade, landing Bruce Brown.

Now, they’re more than likely to use his contract to get even more assets for their future.

According to a report by Mike Scotto of HoopsHype, the Raptors are firmly expected to pick up Brown’s option, which is worth around $23 million, and immediately start exploring trade options for him (via Evan Sidery).

June 28, one day after the draft, is the deadline on Brown’s option.

The Raptors reportedly got plenty of inquiries about Brown before the trade deadline before eventually deciding to hold on to him for the remainder of the season.

Brown is one of the best role players in the game, a versatile guard who can guard and play multiple positions and whose championship experience could come in handy for multiple contenders.

The Denver Nuggets surely regretted not being able to keep him around last season, as he was a huge contributor to their NBA championship with his defense, playmaking, and timely shot-making.

Of course, $23 million is a lot for a non-start, but given his contract structure and experience, it wouldn’t be shocking to see at least half-a-dozen teams picking up the phone and reaching out to the Raptors to try and get him.
