The MLB world and the sports community just lost one of their most beloved representatives.

Baseball legend Willie Mays has passed away at the age of 93.

Los Angeles Lakers great Magic Johnson took to Twitter to lament his passing, claiming that he was one of the main reasons why he fell in love with baseball.

Johnson shared his condolences and claimed that he and his wife, Cookie, would pray for his friends, family, and fans during this difficult time.

I’m devastated to hear about the passing of the legendary Hall of Famer Willie Mays, one of the main reasons I fell in love with baseball. Cookie and I are praying for his family, friends, and fans during this difficult time.

Notably, Mays died just two days before a game between the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals to honor the Negro Leagues at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama, and he was expected to be in attendance.

Now, he’s most likely going to get a tribute there.

The legendary center fielder started his pro career in the Negro Leagues back in 1948, and he was the game’s oldest living Hall of Famer.

He was considered one of the greatest players to ever live, with the Giants retiring his No. 24.

He had the five tools to dominate in baseball — hitting for power and average, speed, throwing, and fielding.

Also, his signature basket catch made him a fan favorite and one of the greatest defenders the game has ever seen.
