The Boston Celtics already broke the bank to pay Jaylen Brown.
Now, they will have to do the same with Jayson Tatum.
Tatum will be eligible to sign a supermax contract extension worth a whopping $315 million, putting him at $63 million a year on average.
Needless to say, that’s a lot of money, and he’d become the highest-paid player in NBA history.
Nonetheless, all things considered, the Celtics shouldn’t even bat an eye and should definitely give him that deal, according to Craig Carton.
Talking on The Carton Show, the renowned sports analyst claimed that Tatum has won a lot of games since he entered the league, and now that they’ve won a championship, there’s no reason to think he’s not worthy of that contract.

Of course, whether Tatum is the best player in the league or not — which he isn’t — is a whole different story, but he’s still a top-ten guy, and as such, he should benefit from the current state of the market.
Also, Tatum was most likely going to get that supermax contract extension regardless of this year’s outcome, so it only makes sense that he’s got that deal all but locked in now.
The Celtics might have a tough time putting talent around him and Brown at some point down the line.
Still, they have most of their core players locked in and under contract already, and you have to double down on any championship team, so Tatum is more than a lock to get a generational contract.
