Over the past two months or so, there’s been constant speculation about what the Los Angeles Lakers would do after parting ways with head coach Darvin Ham after only two seasons with the team.
It didn’t take long before former player turned ESPN analyst JJ Redick became a candidate for the head coaching job in Los Angeles, as he was frequently mentioned as the frontrunner, even though he hasn’t coached a game on any level.
Despite an aggressive attempt to make UConn’s Dan Hurley the new head coach of the Lakers, Redick ultimately got the job with the news breaking earlier this week that the team had agreed to a four-year deal with the 39-year-old.
With Redick having no coaching experience of any kind, there’s a lot of concern about whether he can do the job, which is arguably one of the toughest jobs to be successful in professional sports, let alone the NBA.
However, some are optimistic that Redick can do well as Ham’s successor in Los Angeles, with Jason Timpf of Hoops Tonight sharing his thoughts on the subject via The Volume.
“As long as that attention to detail is there… I do think this is a job that JJ can succeed in,” Timpf said.

Although the odds are against him, Redick has an opportunity to prove the doubters wrong moving forward, as he will have a talented roster to work with and two superstars helping lead the way in LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
It remains to be seen whether Redick can be successful, but for the time being, the Lakers’ decision will be met with skepticism, and for good reason.
