The Washington Wizards’ front office got a big reinforcement.

Following another disappointing season, the Detroit Pistons parted ways with former GM Troy Weaver.

Now, he’s going to join another ever-struggling franchise, this time in the nation’s capital.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Weaver is going to serve as a senior adviser.

He’ll now be reunited with Michael Winger and Will Dawkins, with whom he worked during their time together with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The timing of this hiring is crucial, as the NBA Draft and free agency are just around the corner.

The Wizards are entering a full-scale rebuild, and Weaver comes with plenty of experience in prospect scouting, evaluation, and development.

He was a pivotal member of the Thunder organization under Sam Presti, helping them develop Kevin Durant, James Harden, Russell Westbrook, Serge Ibaka, and Reggie Jackson.

He didn’t find that kind of success with the Pistons, though, and even though he helped them stack their roster with young talent while also dumping plenty of bad contracts, the organization decided to go in a whole new direction after the team went on to have the worst losing streak in NBA history last season.

The Wizards weren’t much better and they clearly have a greater need for young talent.

Armed with the No. 2 pick and some salary cap, Weaver and the front office will look to begin their turnaround next season, most likely using that selection to land French big man Alexandre Sarr as their new franchise cornerstone.
