The Cleveland Cavaliers hired an offensive-minded coach with plenty of experience coaching talented guards.

That bodes well for Donovan Mitchell and his future.

So, now that they got that out of the way, they can shift their focus back to signing him to a contract extension, and that’s exactly what’s about to happen.

According to a report by Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Cavs are ready to offer Mitchell a four-year max contract extension worth a whopping $209 million.

Cavaliers working to secure two fronts: Cleveland is confident about reaching a contract extension soon with Donovan Mitchell and is in final stages of deciding its new coach, according to sources.

Despite the rumors surrounding him for years, the Cavaliers were always quite confident in their ability to get Mitchell to sign a contract extension, as opposed to forcing his way to New York City as most people expected.

Mitchell put the brakes on the extension talks multiple times in the past, but he never requested a trade or talked about not being happy in Cleveland.

The Cavaliers are also likely to move on from Darius Garland now.

Clearly, their pairing was promising on paper, but it never panned out on the court.

Garland’s usage and efficiency dipped with Mitchell there, and his camp will also reportedly push for a trade somewhere else, as he needs to have the ball in his hands to be more efficient and impactful.

Also, Kenny Atkinson will have to focus on Evan Mobley’s offensive development, as his growth has stunted.

Whatever the case, it seems like this team will be very competitive for years to come, or at least while Mitchell is there and healthy.
