If the Detroit Pistons want a new head coach before the NBA draft, they will need to move quickly.

The team has been looking for someone to replace Monty Williams after a disastrous 2023–24 season and they have narrowed it down to a few people.

According to Evan Sidery, everyone should “keep a close eye” on James Borrego to get the job.

Sidery noted that Trajan Langdon, Detroit’s President of Basketball Operations, worked alongside Borrego in New Orleans.

“Borrego’s scheme is an ideal fit to fully maximize Cade Cunningham,” Sidery reported.

Keep a close eye on James Borrego becoming the frontrunner soon for the Pistons’ head coaching vacancy.

Getting the most out of Cunningham is a very good idea because he’s proven to be a spectacular player during his three years in the league.

Despite the Pistons being undeniably terrible last season, Cunningham put up 22.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 7.5 assists per game, shooting 44.5% from the floor and 35.5% from beyond the three-point line.

It’s clear that Cunningham should be the centerpiece of the team and their most important player.

If Borrego is hired, he will be tasked with seeing how he can help the Pistons get back on track.

He has spent years as an assistant coach for New Orleans, the Orlando Magic, and San Antonio Spurs.

He has also had stints as head coach for the Magic and Charlotte Hornets.

Borrego has been attached to multiple coaching vacancies over the last few years but none of them have panned out.

It now looks like he will be given the tough job of helping the Pistons become some sort of playoff contender within the next few years.

The good news for Borrego and the Pistons is that there is a lot of talent on the team; it just needs to be utilized.
