The Minnesota Timberwolves took a major step forward this season by finishing with the third seed in the Western Conference and reaching the Western Conference Finals.

They’re starting to look like a legitimate championship contender, and some of the credit has to go to head coach Chris Finch.

On Monday, Finch secured a four-year contract extension to remain with the Timberwolves as their bench leader, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Finch paid his dues for several years as an assistant coach with the Houston Rockets, Denver Nuggets, New Orleans Pelicans and Toronto Raptors before he was named as Minnesota’ head coach midway through the 2020-21 season.

Since then, he has made Minnesota into an outstanding defensive team while overseeing Anthony Edwards’ development into one of the NBA’s best and brightest young superstars.

Finch dealt with adversity this spring when a freak accident during the first round of the playoffs resulted in him rupturing his patellar tendon, which impacted his ability to coach on the bench during games.

Still, the Timberwolves managed to win the first two games of the second round of the playoffs against the defending world champion Denver Nuggets, then destroyed the Nuggets in the second half of Game 7 to advance to the West Finals for the first time since 2004.

While their roster isn’t perfect and still has room for improvement, it possesses plenty of length and defensive ability, two things that always bode well for teams across the league no matter the era.
