The Los Angeles Lakers entered the offseason with an interesting head coach conundrum.
Despite making the playoffs for the second consecutive season, the Lakers fired head coach Darvin Ham, opting to search for someone else to take over the role.
After weeks of searching and interviews, it seemed like they had found their guy in Dan Hurley.
While the Lakers wanted him to become their newest head coach, Hurley had other plans.
He decided to stick around at UConn, staying in the collegiate ranks for at least one more season, leaving the Lakers to find someone else.
Thankfully, J.J. Redick was still available and at the top of their list, and they acted quickly to sign him to a coaching contract.
Some people might have been upset in Redick’s situation, given the fact that he was the team’s second choice.
However, Redick approached the conversation with humility and grace, as he said in a press conference shared by CBS Sports on Twitter.
“Dan Hurley is a two-time national champion at UConn. I am a two-time 55 Swish League Champion in the third and fourth-grade division. I understood,” Redick said.

Redick has the understanding that he might not have as many coaching accolades as Hurley, which could be a negative as it pertains to his qualifications to lead this team.
However, with a great relationship with LeBron James and a solid understanding of what it takes to win in this league, Redick could surprise a lot of people this year and bring the Lakers an abundance of success.
