The Dallas Mavericks were so close to the Larry O’Brien trophy that they could actually smell it.

They fell short against the best team in the Association, and while there should be no shame in losing to a team like the Boston Celtics, they need to ride this momentum to get back to the mountaintop.

That’s why it’s not much of a surprise to see that they’re interested in making a big splash in the offseason.

According to a report by Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson, Jason Kidd’s team is currently keeping tabs on Kevin Durant’s situation (via Legion Hoops).

Durant’s name has been trending on social media over the past day.

With the Brooklyn Nets and Houston Rockets engaging in a big trade involving picks, some state that Houston is bracing to make a run at the two-time NBA champion.

That makes a move to Dallas even less likely.

The Mavericks don’t have enough assets to outbid the Rockets, and — obviously — trading Luka Doncic is simply out of the question.

It’s hard to envision them moving on from Kyrie Irving either, and a big part of the idea of trading for Durant might be to get him reunited with his best friend, even if things didn’t work out in Brooklyn.

The Mavs may not have a chance to get the Phoenix Suns’ star.

Still, we’ve seen crazier things happen in this league.
