There hasn’t been an NBA Draft with a less obvious No. 1 pick since likely 2013 when the Cleveland Cavaliers shocked the world by taking Anthony Bennett first overall, but that’s exactly where we are in 2024 with the Atlanta Hawks on the clock and no clear superstar worthy of going first.
Fans have been mostly in the dark about what is going on behind the scenes this year, but ESPN’s Brian Windhorst recently shed some light on what he’s hearing about the first overall pick.
Windy appeared on The Pat McAfee Show this morning and said “I think the Atlanta Hawks are leaning towards Zaccharie Risacher with the No. 1 pick” and added that he’s a “safe pick at No. 1, he’s 6’9″, he can handle the ball a little bit, I actually think he’s a really good passer.”

Windhorst acknowledged that Risacher isn’t a guy who is going to come in and change a franchise right away but could be a really good third or fourth starter on a good team someday, “and in this draft, that’s pretty good.”
Windhorst also believes Alex Sarr will go No. 2 to the Washington Wizards and is another upside pick that will likely take a few years to pan out.
All signs do appear to be pointing toward Risacher, especially with Sarr dodging workouts with the Hawks.
This is a difficult draft to trade down in if that’s what the Hawks are looking to do, as there isn’t a prospect worth trading up for.
Risacher is still a complete unknown, but if he’s the first overall pick, fans are about to get familiar with him very quickly.
