The Cleveland Cavaliers have a new coach.
It took them a while, and they had to go through several candidates, but they’ve finally zeroed in on Kenny Atkinson.
A couple of days ago, ESPN insider Adrian Wojnarowski broke the news of this hire.
Now, he reveals that his pact with the organization will be a five-year deal.

Notably, it’s not so usual to see teams honor those contracts anymore, so it makes sense for the former Golden State Warriors assistant to push for some financial security by making this a long-term deal.
Atkinson comes with previous coaching experience as well.
He led a young and unproven Brooklyn Nets team to an unlikely postseason berth, and he’s got a reputation for being a great offensive mind.
Still, for whatever reason, reports stated that Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving weren’t sold on him or his ability to lead the team to success.
Atkinson had been a coaching candidate multiple times ever since, but he decided to stay put in the Bay area and serve under Steve Kerr.
Now, he’s ready to get back out there as the main guy and prove the doubters wrong in this new endeavor by taking this up-and-coming team to another level.
Notably, he could get the best out of Donovan Mitchell, as he already had the best version of D’Angelo Russell and got to work with Stephen Curry for years, so this is an exciting time for the Cavaliers.
