Not many people thought the Seattle Seahawks would be any good without Russell Wilson.

A quarterback room consisting of Geno Smith and Drew Lock wasn’t exactly promising, and most fans and analysts expected Lock — who was the younger player — to get the nod over Smith.

That wasn’t the case.

The veteran beat him during training camp before having the best season of his career.

He proved that he was an NFL-caliber quarterback and got a big contract to be their quarterback for the future.

Fast forward to today, and Dave Canales still has nothing but praise for him.

Talking to Peter Schrager for his podcast, the former Seahawks quarterback coach claimed that Smith seemed poised to take over the offense.

“Nobody throws a prettier ball than Geno Smith…”

Loved my chat with new Panthers HC Dave Canales for this week’s “The Season with Peter Schrager” pod. I thought his appreciation for and relationship with @GenoSmith3 is beyond cool. @gmfb @nflnetwork @NFLMedia pic.twitter.com/bIPvK685LU

He revealed that he had a 78% completion rate in his first training camp there, adding that no one in the league throws a prettier football than him.

The Carolina Panthers head coach revealed that Smith always knew that he could prove his worth if he ever got another chance, which is why he wasn’t surprised to see him thrive as soon as Wilson headed out.

Smith is a prime example of why it’s not wise to give up on quarterbacks early in their career, and how a poorly-ran organization could mess up a player’s development.

The ultimate late bloomer, Smith had to grind, and his history should be an inspiration for other perennial backups out there trying to make it.
