The Cleveland Cavaliers entered the offseason with two big priorities.

First, they needed to find a new coach to replace J.B. Bickerstaff.

Then, they had to sign Donovan Mitchell to a contract extension.

Notably, they can now cross off both items from their list.

Shortly after hiring Kenny Atkinson to be their next coach, they’ve managed to get the Louisville star locked in for years to come.

According to a report by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the All-Star guard has agreed on a three-year, $150.3 million maximum contract extension with the Cavaliers.

The deal, per Woj, includes a player option for the 2027-28 season.

This wasn’t expected for most of Mitchell’s tenure in Cleveland, and the word around the league was that he was going to force his way to the New York Knicks eventually.

The Cavaliers, however, never wavered in their mission and desire to convince him to stay.

Mitchell is their undisputed foundational piece, and they want to build their roster around him.

Of course, there are some concerns regarding his knee and whether he’s going to need surgery or not, and that could’ve also played a role in his decision to sign this contract extension.

Whatever the case, it seems like he’s not going anywhere, and all those rumors about him not being happy in Cleveland weren’t true, evidently.

Now, the Cavs will have to make a decision regarding Darius Garland and whether he’s the right fit next to their franchise player for years to come.
