Klay Thompson set the next chapter of his career a few days ago when he committed to a contract with the Dallas Mavericks.
Thompson is a four-time champion and still considered one of the best NBA shooters of all time, so many people think he’ll help the team’s chances of winning the Finals.
Apparently that might not be the case.
According to “First Take,” the Mavericks’ title odds haven’t changed at all since adding Thompson.
They were 11-1 before Thompson and they remain 11-1 now.

There are likely a couple of reasons why the Mavericks haven’t been odds-on favorites to win now that Thompson is on board.
Firstly, he is coming off of a bad season when he wasn’t assisting the Golden State Warriors much.
There is fear that his rough stretch continues and, if that’s the case, the Mavericks will struggle offensively when he is on the court.
Secondly, even if Thompson is again in fine form, he will be playing a redundant role.
Both Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving are two sharpshooters who handle the ball and make terrific shots.
Adding a player like Thompson could boost the team’s shooting in some ways, but it doesn’t solve their biggest problem: a lack of defense.
Until the Mavericks get better on both ends of the court, many people will assume they don’t have what it takes to be champions.
Thompson was a big acquisition and he might fit well in the lineup but he likely isn’t the missing piece that will give the Mavericks the Larry O’Brien trophy.
