Last year, the San Antonio Spurs had the opportunity to bring in a generational and game-changing player with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, with French phenom Victor Wembanyama there for the taking once they were on the clock.

Fortunately for Spurs fans, the San Antonio brass didn’t overthink it and brought in a player who got as much hype as, or even more than, LeBron James when he came into the league in 2003, drafted by his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers at No. 1 overall.

Obviously, James lived up to the hype and now has four NBA titles to his credit along with the distinction of being one of the greatest players of all time, while the Spurs are hoping the same thing happens with Wembanyama, who is already off to a very good start.

Although Wembanyama was as advertised in his rookie campaign, the Spurs were sorely lacking at point guard, and the consensus was that they would look for an upgrade at the position this offseason, which they got by reportedly adding veteran Chris Paul.

According to Skip Bayless of FOX Sports, Paul will have more of an impact in San Antonio than legendary head coach Gregg Popovich, which is a bold take, to say the least.

“Chris Paul will be more valuable than Gregg Popovich in San Antonio,” Bayless said.

At this stage in Paul’s career, competing for that elusive NBA title seems to be out of the realm of possibility, as he just wasn’t the same player last season with the Golden State Warriors.

However, he can help Wembanyama tremendously while in San Antonio, but having more of an impact than Popovich is a bit of a stretch.
