The Los Angeles Lakers failed to land a big-time player, but they could still improve their roster by making the right moves.

There isn’t that much left in free agency at this point, yet they could still find a difference-maker at the right price.

According to a report by Jovan Buha of The Athletic (via Evan Sidery), the Lakers have set their sights on Gary Trent Jr.

Nonetheless, the report also states that they need to clear some salary cap space in order to be allowed to use their taxpayer mid-level exception to get him.

The Lakers are showing interest in signing Gary Trent Jr., per @jovanbuha (https://t.co/IoAt6UU1FQ).

Trent averaged 13.7 points while shooting 39.3% on threes for the Raptors.

Trent Jr. was reportedly looking to fetch a very lucrative deal in free agency, but that hasn’t been the case thus far.

The fact that the Toronto Raptors didn’t sign him to a contract extension was a hint of what was to come and that he was no longer a part of their plans.

Now, with Buddy Hield and Malik Beasley getting somewhat cheap deals with the Golden State Warriors and Detroit Pistons, respectively, it seems like he may not be able to get the kind of money he was looking for.

The 25-year-old has seen his scoring average dwindle over the past couple of seasons, but he still shot over 38% from beyond the arc last season.

The Lakers are in clear need of shooting, which is why they also targeted Dalton Knecht in the first round of the NBA Draft.

Trent is a reliable shooter who could embrace a role off the bench, so he definitely makes sense for this team.
