LeBron James agreed to a two-year, $101.4 million deal with the Los Angeles Lakers recently, which is $3 million less than the maximum deal he could have received.

Some fans were shocked to see James agree to a smaller payday with the Lakers, but James clarified why he chose that choice.

Speaking with Tim Bontemps, per Legion Hoops, James revealed the reason he took less money in the new deal is because “when you’re in a relationship, there are things you have to do sometimes.”

He added that he wanted to ensure the Lakers had more financial flexibility when it comes to adding to the roster for next season.

$3 million might not be a huge amount of money when it comes to such monster contracts, but James taking a pay cut shows that he wants his team to do whatever it can to get stronger before next season begins.

If used correctly, that sum of money could be the key to landing more talent on the roster and giving James, Anthony Davis, and the rest of the squad more assistance.

So far, however, the Lakers haven’t made any major additions in the offseason.

They added two promising rookies and got a new head coach but there hasn’t been any A-list, win-now talent brought to Los Angeles, at least not yet.

Have the Lakers lost their appeal and do stars not want to play for them, even with James on board?

There are a lot of questions swirling around about LA, James, and the team’s future.

But one thing is for sure: James is still around in Los Angeles, for a bit less money.

He is doing that because he believes in the team and wants the best for them.

Now it’s up to the front office to make some moves.
