The Los Angeles Lakers wanted to sign UConn head coach Dan Hurley and offered him a ton of money and a long-term deal weeks ago.
But Hurley didn’t take them up on their offer and instead decided to stick with his current job.
Now the specifics of his new contract with UConn have come out and they are quite surprising.
According to Adam Zagoria, per NBACentral, Hurley declined a six-year, $70 million deal from the Lakers and instead went with a six-year, $50 million extension with UConn.
That means that Hurley is receiving far less money, which has many people questioning the Lakers.

Certain people believe that Hurley’s choice proves the bad shape of the Lakers.
To some, the team is so toxic that coaches are giving up millions of dollars to avoid working for them.

Meanwhile, others state that Hurley’s decision isn’t about the Lakers but is instead more about his legacy and work with UConn.
The team has won back-to-back college championships under Hurley and he wants more.

Finally, many people said that Hurley simply chose to focus on his happiness over a payday.
It’s hard to argue with that sentiment, especially since coming to Los Angeles would have involved a cross-country move for his entire family.

The Hurley episode was a very embarrassing one for the Lakers and it’s now even more embarrassing since people know just how much money he gave up in order to remain with UConn.
